Urea (USP / Cosmetic Grade)
Urea is a naturally occurring component of the skin’s Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), found in the epidermis where it plays a vital role in maintaining optimal hydration and the integrity of the stratum corneum. As a powerful humectant, urea attracts and retains moisture, helping to keep the skin soft, smooth, and healthy.
In addition to its moisturizing benefits, urea supports skin barrier function, including antimicrobial defense. Historically, urea was one of the earliest ingredients used in modern medicine for the topical treatment of wounds due to its proteolytic and antibacterial properties. Today, it is widely used in dermatology and cosmetic formulations as an effective moisturizer and keratolytic agent.
Urea improves the appearance of dry, rough, and scaly skin in two key ways:
- By deeply hydrating the skin to improve texture and smoothness
- By helping to reduce the buildup of dead skin cells on the surface
